V’etchanan

This week, Moshe continues his speech to the Israelite people, who are on the brink of their big move into the land of Canaan. He reminds them of all that they saw on their journeys in the desert, including receiving the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai. In our reiteration of the Ten Commandments in this week’s parsha, we see a meaningful discrepancy. Instead ofזָכוֹר אֶת־י֥וֹם֩ הַשַׁבָּ֖֨ת Remember the day of ShabbatWe read,שָׁמ֣֛וֹר אֶת־י֥וֹם֩ הַשַׁבָּ֖֨ת Guard the day of ShabbatRashi explains that both of these words were heard in the same utterance. Both remembering and guarding are at the essence of what we are asked to do. It’s not enough to simply remember Shabbat, we must also guard it as a sacred time. It’s also not enough to simple guard it, we must also remember what is at the core of Shabbat--a time for connection, openness, and light.
