This week we have a troubling story about trauma. Following G!d’s command, Avraham binds his son Yitzhak to an altar to sacrifice him. Yitzhak is nearly silent. Perhaps because his name means laughter, the world expected him to laugh, there was little room for his tears. A midrash comes in to fill the gaps: The ministering angels wept. Tears dropped from their eyes into his and were imprinted upon his eyes so that, when he aged, his eyes dimmed. Where Yitzhak couldn’t cry, the heavens cried for him.
