Vayechi

This week, we read of the end of Yakov’s life. When the time came for Yakov to leave this world, Yosef brought his children, Ephraim and Menashe, to receive a blessing. Yakov responds to his grandchildren with somewhat shocking bluntness, מִי אֵֽלֶּה? Who are these?
A midrash paints the picture for us. Yakov’s grandchildren were dressed like Egyptian princes because of their father’s governmental role. Yakov, also known as Yisrael, didn’t recognize them as part of his Jewish family. His grandson’s reassured him: "Shema, Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai Echad. Listen, Yisrael! Adonai is our God, Adonai alone." In a sigh of relief, Yakov responded: "baruch shem k'vod malchuto l'olam va-ed -- praised be God's name for ever and ever!" Perhaps this is why we bless young people to be like Ephraim and Menashe: that our connection to G!d and Torah may be deep and unwavering, no matter how we present to the outside world.
