The weekday Amida, which means “standing” contains 18 blessings that are traditionally recited standing up, three times a day. Within these 18 blessings, we recite the following blessing for restoration of justice,
הָשִֽׁיבָה שׁוֹפְ֒טֵֽינוּ כְּבָרִאשׁוֹנָה וְיוֹעֲצֵֽינוּ כְּבַתְּ֒חִלָּה וְהָסֵר מִמֶּֽנּוּ יָגוֹן וַאֲנָחָה וּמְלוֹךְ עָלֵֽינוּ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה לְבַדְּ֒ךָ בְּחֶֽסֶד וּבְרַחֲמִים וְצַדְּ֒קֵֽנוּ בַּמִשְׁפָּט. בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יְהֹוָה מֶֽלֶךְ אֹהֵב צְדָקָה וּמִשְׁפָּט
Hashivah shofteinu k’varishonah v’yoatzeinu k’vat’chilah v’haser mimeinu yagon va’anacha um’loch aleinu atah Adonai l’vadecha b’chesed uv’rachamim v’tzadkeinu bamishpat. Baruch atah Adonai melech ohev tzedakah u’mishpat.
Restore our judges as before and our counselors as at first. Remove sorrow and sighing from us, and reign over us You, Hashem, alone with kindness and compassion; and make us righteous with justice.
Blessed are You, Hashem our G!d, Ruler of the world, Lover of righteousness and justice.
In this time of political uncertainty, this blessing is asking us three times daily to stretch ourselves to envision judges and counselors that have our best interests in mind. To envision a world in which there is no sorrow or sighing in despair. And ultimately, asking that G!d make us righteous through justice, reminding us that though we continue to long for and fight for a just world, that it begins with us. How can you live into the values of righteousness and justice in your day to day life?
