Toldot

This week, we hear about Yitzhak and Rivka’s family. It’s a story of trickery and deceit, where there is little trust amongst people. The tension starts from the very beginning. “The children struggled in her womb.” Once born, the two twins Yakov (the dweller of tents) and Esau (the man of the field) continue to struggle in the world. Yakov and his mother Rivka trick Esau, pushing him out of the family and away from his father’s blessing.Esau lifted his voice and wept. The rabbis have attributed all sorts of negative traits to Esau--harshness, anger, and even idolatry. But, according to the text, he was simply a hunter with a strong connection to the physical. People didn’t understand him. Perhaps by pushing out the Esau within our communities or ourselves, we cause more pain than good. Who or what have we been pushing out that we can finally work to understand and bring close?
