Tazria

This week we learn about various ailments of skin, clothing, and home and their corresponding spiritual remedies. Regarding a person with a skin ailment, this week’s parsha says the person is to tear their clothes, let their hair grow wild and call out, “Impure, impure!” Presumably, this calling out is in order to warn others not to get too close. The Rabbis of the Talmud, however, understand it differently. The person with the skin ailment needs to call out, not in order to warn people to stay away, but rather to announce his pain in order to pull people in closer. It’s the compassion of others that will support his healing. Perhaps you know someone who seems like they are warning others not to get too close, but is actually in need of support and healing. How can we listen with compassion, being willing to draw close to those who are suffering?
