Shemini

This week we read of the tragic death of Aaron’s sons, Nadav and Avihu. Approaching the altar with their fire pans in an offering to G!d, they were consumed by an overwhelming fire. Perhaps this tragic episode can be viewed differently when we look at the words closely. Since the words לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה, before G!d, appear three times in this small passage, it may be that the fire that Nadav and Avihu were consumed by was not a punishment from G!d, rather a divine light too bright for humans to witness. We understand further through the Biur Halacha who explains that, though they had best intentions, Nadav and Avihu violated the boundaries that were in place to keep them safe. The word קְדֻשָּׁה, usually translated as holiness, at its root means to separate, distinguished, or set apart. As with any relationship, in order to truly connect to G!d, we need boundaries and containers. What are the structures and boundaries you need in your relationships to keep you grounded?
