Shabbat Kodesh Walnut End-Grain Board - Ready to Ship
This board is a single slice cut across the trunk of a walnut tree, so you can see the growth rings and the natural shape of the tree itself. Because it’s end grain, the wood fibers face upward, which makes it one of the best surfaces you can cut on. A knife slips between the fibers instead of slicing across them, so the board holds up beautifully to use, and it’s gentler on your knife’s edge.
At 8.75" × 23", it’s long enough for two loaves with room to slice and serve right at the table. The board is finished with Odie’s Oil, a solvent-free blend of natural plant oils and waxes. It’s food-safe once cured and brings out the depth of the walnut and the pattern of the rings.
The Hebrew reads Shabbat Kodesh (שבת קודש), “Holy Shabbat.” Kodesh means holiness, but at its root it means something set apart. Shabbat is holy because we set it apart from the rest of the week, with a slower pace, a gathered table, and bread blessed and shared.
It’s made in my Boston workshop and meant to become part of your Shabbat and holiday table for years to come. It’s also a meaningful gift for a wedding, a housewarming, or a new home.

Care
This board is made to be used, and you can slice your challah on it. Like any wood, it will show light knife marks over time. End grain hides them better than most boards, and they’re part of the life of a well-loved board. To keep the design crisp, cut around the lettering rather than across it. If you’d rather keep the surface pristine, you can tear the challah by hand and use the board just for serving.
End grain absorbs moisture more than other boards, so it needs a little more care. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth and dry it right away, then let it air-dry standing on its edge. Never soak it or put it in the dishwasher. Re-oil once a month, or whenever the wood looks dry, with Odie’s Oil or a food-safe board oil. Apply a generous coat, let it soak in overnight, and wipe off the excess. Regular oiling is the best way to keep an end-grain board from drying out and cracking.
Because this board is a natural slice of a tree, the grain, ring pattern, and shape are completely unique. Small natural checks or variations in the wood are part of its character.
