Behind this piece:
In this week’s Torah portion, ‘Noach,’ after the flood subsides, G!d promises “I will maintain My covenant with you: never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” G!d reveals the rainbow as the everlasting sign of this covenant between G!d and us. Everytime we see a rainbow, we’re encouraged to say:
בָּרוּךְ אַתָּה יהוה אֱלהֵינוּ מֶלֶך הָעולָם זוכֵר
הַבְּרִית וְנֶאֱמָן בִּבְרִיתו וְקַיָּם בְּמַאֲמָרו
Blessed are You, LORD, our G!d, King of the Universe, who remembers the covenant, and is faithful to G!d’s covenant, and keeps G!d’s promise.
Why do we say this upon seeing a rainbow, after a storm?
Perhaps, after a literal or metaphorical storm or flood in our lives, we need to remember that there is beauty, there is color and light and so much good in the world.
The rainbow is a reminder that we are going to be okay.
