The Talmud tells us, a name can determine our destiny. This week Avram and Sarai become Avraham and Sarah, both names getting an added letter ה. This one letter changes the course of their lives. Why the letter ה? The name of G!d known as the “ineffable/unpronounceable name” is יהוה. This holy name has only repeating letter— ה. If it had a sound, it would sound like breathing, like air going in and out of our lungs. It’s the sound of existing. It’s no mistake that the letters, when rearranged in Hebrew, create the words that mean “is, was, and will be.” By receiving the letter ה into their names, Sarah and Avraham become plugged into the Divine and are ready to be the official matriarch and patriarch of our tradition.
