Eikev

In this week’s Parsha, Eikev we learn the reasons for various commandments; the blessings and curses that come from observing them, or failing to. We also receive the second paragraph of the Shema, which is recited daily. If, then, you obey the commandments that I enjoin upon you this day to love... The verse goes on, but if stopped here we learn that the core of the mitzvot is love, and that they can guide us in reaching towards love. The Sfat Emet explains, with the help of Rabbenu Tam, “The root of love is the lover becoming like unto the beloved. Thus when...when we make our ways and deeds like G!d’s, we become attached to G!d.” What does it mean to orient our lives and deeds around love? How does that impact the way we connect to Torah, G!d, and ourselves?
