Chayei Sarah

Last week, Yitzhak was bound at the altar. This week, his mother Sarah dies. The rabbis wonder how these two events are related, and thus a midrash is born: It depicts Yitzhak bound on the altar, and worried for his mother. This concern for his mother awoke the heavens, stopping Avraham before he could slaughter his son. At that moment, an evil force came to Sarah disguised as Yitzhak. When she saw him, she said: “My son, what has your father done to you?” He told her everything that had happened on the mountain. And, before he could finish speaking, Sarah died of heartbreak. This week we are heartbroken, we carry both the trauma of Yitzhak and the protective love of Sarah. May we be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem, knowing that we are not the first to have our hearts broken, and we will not be the last to heal and rise up together.
