Beha’alotecha

This week, G!d commands the Israelites, by way of Moshe, to create a Menorah:וְזֶ֨ה מַעֲשֵׂ֤ה הַמְּנֹרָה֙ מִקְשָׁ֣ה זָהָ֔בThis is how the Menorah was made: it was hammered work of goldRashi asks, why does the verse say וְזֶ֨ה, “and this?” He answers by explaining that Moshe needed a visual guide to understand how it was constructed, therefore G!d showed him as if pointing a finger at an image and saying “this.” Rabbi Shlomo Kluger, however, disagrees. He explains that the menorah was a symbol of the unity of the Jewish people--the good and the bad, the important and the lowly, all of them are “hammered together” like the Menorah. This, he explains, is what Moshe was confused by: How all of Israel could be unified amidst their myriad of differences, and yet still give off light to the world. How can we create light as one people, unified despite our many differences in practice, politics and more?
