Bamidbar

This week in our new book, Bamidbar, Moshe conducts a census:שְׂא֗וּ אֶת־רֹאשׁ֙ כָּל־עֲדַ֣ת בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְמִשְׁפְּחֹתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבֹתָ֑ם בְּמִסְפַּ֣ר שֵׁמ֔וֹת כָּל־זָכָ֖ר לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָֽם׃Take a census of the whole Israelite community by the clans of its ancestral houses, listing the names, every man, head by head. What is the significance of counting? The Mei HaShiloach explains that the word to count can also mean to raise, “‘Raise’ is an expression of elevation - that is, through the counting every individual will feel heightened and supported.” Therefore, Moshe conducted a census that was not merely a counting but a raising, a reminder of the importance of every single person and the particular holiness that they bring to the world. What would it mean if you truly believed that your unique presence mattered in the world?
