Balak
This week, we receive a blessing from an untraditional source. Out of fear, the Moabite King Balak orders his magician Balaam to curse the Israelite people. On the way to his cursing spot atop a mountain, Balaam’s donkey would not move forward, even protesting with words and explaining to Balaam that there was a reason they could not go forward. G!d uncovered Balaam’s eyes and he saw an angel standing before him, who instructed that he should indeed go, but he can only say that which G!d puts in his mouth. On three different mountains, in three different attempts to curse and fulfil the will of Balak, what instead flows from Balaam’s mouth are blessings and praises of the Israelite people, including a blessing we say every dayמַה־טֹּ֥בוּ אֹהָלֶ֖יךָ יַעֲקֹ֑ב מִשְׁכְּנֹתֶ֖יךָ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃How fair are your tents, O Jacob. Your dwellings, O Israel! What blessings might be available to us if we uncover our eyes? How can we let go of the tunnel vision that often keeps us limited in our perspective?
